Neck injury ends Miami CB Young's career

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) Miami cornerback Malek Young's football career is over.

The Hurricanes announced Sunday that a neck injury Young sustained during last month's Orange Bowl against Wisconsin will require career-ending surgery to repair.

Young will remain on scholarship for the remainder of his academic career. Miami did not reveal the specifics of his injury.

Stanford QB Chryst plans to transfer

STANFORD, Calif. (AP) Stanford quarterback Keller Chryst plans to transfer for his final season of eligibility.

Chryst announced Sunday that he will transfer after he graduates in June. He will be immediately eligible as a graduate transfer.

Leach: Hilinski no signs of depression

Washington State coach Mike Leach said Saturday there were no outward signs that would have alarmed coaches or teammates before Tyler Hilinski took his own life.

A day after an emotional vigil on the Washington State campus that included Hilinski's family and teammates, Leach spoke on a conference call and made his first extensive comments about Hilinski's death. Hilinski died Tuesday of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) For J.T. Barrett, playing in the 93rd East-West Shrine game was more about showing what type of leader he is than impressing statistically.

"I think, at the end of the day, I wanted to show I could command the offense," the Big Ten's career total yardage leader said Saturday.

Herron, Apke shine at Collegiate Bowl

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) Defense ruled in a game meant to showcase potential NFL players, and LSU defensive tackle Frank Herron and Penn State linebacker Troy Apke delivered the final blows.

The 312-pound Herron returned a fumble for a late touchdown and Apke had an interception while earning MVP honors, helping the National team stifle the American team 23-0 in the NFL Players Association Collegiate Bowl on Saturday.

Alabama team, fans celebrate title

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) Tens of thousands of fans gathered to celebrate Alabama's latest national championship, one that was especially hard to achieve.

This time the Crimson Tide had to overcome a loss in the final regular-season game, a series of defensive injuries and a period of uncertainty when it wasn't clear if a fourth consecutive playoff invitation was even forthcoming.

Division II to allow Mexican colleges

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) The NCAA's Division II voted by a wide margin Saturday to allow Mexican colleges to apply for membership, expanding its international reach beyond Canada.

The legislation takes effect immediately. Schools must meet all Division II standards, including facilities and staff, before being considered.

Record 106 underclassmen headed to draft

Quarterbacks Sam Darnold, Lamar Jackson and Josh Rosen are among the record 106 underclassmen given special entry to the NFL draft, making it four of the last five seasons in which at least 95 players have declared early.

The NFL on Friday released the official list of college players who have requested early entry . Another 13 players who had eligibility remaining are eligible for the draft after notifying the NFL that they had completed requirements for a degree, including Wyoming quarterback Josh Allen. Another four players, including Nebraska quarterback Tanner Lee, had inquired about their draft status and were eligible without the need for special eligibility.

Clemson reserve QB Cooper to transfer

CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) Clemson reserve quarterback Zerrick Cooper is leaving the Tigers.

Cooper announced his decision on Twitter on Friday. Cooper is a 6-foot-2, 220-pound redshirt freshman from Jonesboro, Georgia. He played in seven games this season behind starter Kelly Bryant, passing for 256 yards and two touchdowns.
